Agung Sari Kusuma lives in Cakranegara, Lombok, Indonesia. He was born in 1962 to a family known locally for their artistry. Agung's mother is a weaver and utilizes skills passed down to her to produce a fine woven cloth known locally as ikat. Two of these pieces are on display in the upcoming exhibition. Agung's father, like most of the male members of the family before him, is a wood-carver and has passed these skills onto Agung.

Having received no formal training in art, Agung started woodcarving as a child. His skills were recognized at an early age and in 1982, he designed and produced his very own unique woodcarvings, which were promoted on a limited basis throughout parts of Asia. As news of his artwork spread, Agung's work became much sought after.

Agung has exhibited his work in Perth, Darwin and Singapore. Agung's Topeng work can be seen in some of the finer International hotels in Indonesia.

Agung concentrates on Topeng, which means Mask. Each piece is designed based on traditional Hindu Lontar manuscript known as "Angling Dharma". The manuscript tells the story of how man and animals communicate. The gecko symbolizes honesty, the fish fertility of the land and the bird harmony. Agung believes these masks represent the true characteristics of human nature. Each piece is different, some are solo men and women, others are based on husband and wife and family groups, some.

No automation is used to produce these pieces. The average piece takes up to four weeks to complete from start to finish. Only natural materials are used in producing the masks and the frames - wood, bark, bamboo and cukli (mother of pearl).

These individually crafted masks represent tradition and beauty. The richness of the earth tones and immense detail used to produce each piece will ensure admiration and pleasure for many years to come.
